The Body

“The body is the instrument of our hold on the world"
Simone de Beauvoir

Suppose you were working on a supply tender, in which the architect has included some really tough requirements.

“.......a liquid pump of 5 litres per minute continuous, with peaks of 20 litres per minute, that will run continuously without maintenance, for at least 60-years and preferably 90.”

This is the specification of the human heart.  Sometimes I think about what a great job Mother Nature and/or Evolution and/or God (you choose) has done with human bodies.  There’s an awful lot of measurement and control going on here, of all the things Homershams look after.

And another example...... "the system must maintain pH to be slightly alkali within ±0.5 pH, except for the stomach, which must be 3 pH ±2 pH"

Or for the lungs....."The system is to contain an liquid purification system based on osmotic filtering. In the system, air must be pumped at variable rates (dependent on system requirements) from -2.5 kPa to +5 kPa.  The filter and purification system must be maintenance free and last 60-90 years.  It will exposed to various contaminates including burned plant material smoke"

I won't labour the point, but I can tell you as a technical sales chap, I would run from this tender, screaming!

So whatever size, shape and special requirements your body has, it's pretty amazing!  As Hamlet says

"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like
a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals—and yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?
